In the Mangystau region lies one of the most beautiful canyons in the country—Kapamsay. Located 250 kilometers from the regional center, the city of Aktau, on the Tyub-Karagan Peninsula, and just five kilometers from the Caspian Sea, Kapamsay is a true natural wonder. The canyon walls are diverse: some parts are pure white, others cream-colored, and in some areas, they even have a silvery hue. The walls reach an astonishing height of up to 70 meters, which is awe-inspiring to behold. Remarkably, in the heart of the canyon, there are mulberry trees growing like an oasis. It’s likely that these trees began to flourish due to the rainwater that constantly accumulates here. According to scientists, the canyon formed during the Jurassic period, possibly when a river once flowed through this area.
Kapamsay attracts tourists from all over the world. Based on artifacts found here, historians believe that several centuries ago, flint workshops were located in the canyon. As you venture into the canyon, against the backdrop of its majestic walls, people and vehicles appear tiny. Wildlife enthusiasts are frequent visitors, as the canyon is home to eagles. Their nests are hidden from human eyes in the high niches of Kapamsay’s cliffs. The mysterious and grand canyon also features a cave carved into one of its walls, situated three meters above the ground. Interestingly, the creator of this cave remains unknown, but it is clear that it is man-made. There are no traces of life in the cave, but remnants of a cradle and a yurt (the traditional nomadic dwelling of Kazakhs) suggest past inhabitants.
A journey to Kapamsay will leave every traveler with unforgettable impressions and, of course, great photos as souvenirs. To organize a tour, you can contact local tour operators, or you can visit the canyon on your own. Don’t forget to bring water and headgear. Have a wonderful trip!
